Icon won't remain on toolbar

Richard H. Gleick

In Word 2003, my partner is attempting to add an icon to his toolbar.
When he drags it to the toolbar, it sticks. However, when he closes then
re-opens Word, the icon is gone. On the other hand, I have no trouble adding
an icon that remains in place.

The only difference I can see is that, on my Customize dialogue box, it says
Save in Normal but on his it says Save In Normal.dot.

Hi Richard,

That difference may be from settings in Windows explorer folder/file settings as to whether or not file extensions are displayed.

There are some add-ins to Word that interfere with changes to the Normal template being saved/remembered but one thing to try is to
use Tools=>Options=>Save and turn on the
[x] Prompt to save Normal template
to see if you get prompted when closing Word.

If not, then try choosing the 'current document' as the place to store the custom icon and close that file to see if it retains the
icon when reopening it, as a test.

This assumes that your partner has Admin rights to save changes to the template folder and the registry in Word.

This is a little complicated to explain but I'll give it a shot--make sure
you look at the options at top at bottom of each window that come up and the
drop-down menus:

Tools>Customize>Rearrange Commands>Toolbar>Modify Selection>Add>Select
desired category (i.e. Insert Toolbar)>Select command you want
added>Ok>Close>Close

Hope that helps.

I am having the same problem. None of theses helps helped. It is also weird
how it only seems to be affecting Word 2003 and not the other Office 2003
programs (I can save an icon in excel). Someone please help us with this
issue.
