icons verses details

We've just started using Word 2002 and I find that when I
click on 'insert picture' the explorer style box that
comes up defaults to thumbnails. Is there a way to reset
the defaults to details? I know it only takes a moment to
click on the button and change it manually but I'd rather
reset the defaults if possible. Thanks

There's some cross-over with the Explorer view of that folder. Try changing
it in Explorer first (with Word closed) and then re-open Word. I can't
guarantee results across different versions of Windows .

Is your default Insert Picture folder "My Pictures"? That folder has default
metadata describing it as a media folder which won't be affected by changes
made to other folders.

No it's not. I set the default to a directory I created to
keep all my work in. I rarely use 'my pictures'.

I've also found this, and haven't found a way around it.

I also find that it doesn't remember the last directory that I looked in -
I'd rather it did. I have to keep navigating to get to the same directory
where I have many pictures.

Are you changing the file-type with subsequent inserts? Programs usually
remember the directory of the last instance of the same file-type.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I'm using Insert > Picture > From file (actually I use a toolbar button
instead) then in the Insert Picture window that appears I navigate to the
folder that contains a set of picture (not in My Pictures) and double-click
on a .jpeg. Immediately afterwards (without firstly closing Word) I repeat
this for a different file (but still a .jpeg) but the Insert Picture window
goes back to the default location (C:\ which I've previously set in Tools >
Options, in the File Locations tab under Clipart Pictures).

Thanks, I've done that in some cases, but the problem is that I have many
places where I store my pictures, so I can't add all of them to the Places
Bar.

But you can add whichever one you're currently using, remove it when you're
done, then add a different one. Also, keep in mind that you can have more
buttons on the Places Bar if you (a) choose Small Icons and (b) increase the
dialog size by dragging (you can even Maximize by double-clicking the title
bar).
