Identities / Aliases In Entourage - MultipleE-Mails Forward To A Single Account

Email Client: imap

Hello,

I have multiple IMAP e-mail accounts that all forward into a main account. In Thunderbird (as well as my web mail), I can create "identities" or "aliases" for each of the "sub accounts" so that even though I can manage all my e-mails from the main box, I can:

a) continue to send messages from the other mailboxes if I want to
b) If I reply to a message that comes into my "main box", it looks like it came from my sub box.

I found mixed information about whether this is doable in Entourage. One place says that it can be done (a send only box), but the reply won't work. Others have said it can be done.

Can someone give me a clean answer on the doability of this?

Thanks,

E

The problem with this is that solution is if you setup a pop account to use
as a alias any mail sent from the alias end up in the sent items on the
computer not the imap sent folder, that ends up confusing the users.

So if you then setup another imap as an alias you end up with 2 or more sets
of folders and double or more accounts syncing to the server just so sent
items end up in the sent folder this also confuses users.

Another problem with imap on Entourage is when you get error like 4362 with
an attachment the message won't stay in the outbox so you can re attach the
file it just disappears into the unknown resulting in angry phone calls from
users saying their mail they have spent ages writing has gone.. again

I'm still yet to find a solution to some of these problems, hopefully I will
find them soon as my users are getting frustrated with entourage since I
changed to imap mail system and getting them all to use apple mail would be a
nightmare.

Michel Bintener, MVP posted these instructions on the Entourage newsgroup
concerning alias addresses:

The alias has to be set up in a slightly different way. First of all,
there's no need to specify any incoming server information; any mail sent to
your alias will be redirected automatically to your main identity, so if you
fill in the incoming server information, you should normally receive
duplicates of any e-mail messages sent to the alias account.

Here's a detailed configuration for the alias account settings in
Tools>Accounts: enter your name, then the alias e-mail address. You can
leave the "Receiving mail" portion blank. In the "Sending mail" section,
enter smtp.mac.com, then click on the button that says "Click here for
advanced sending options". In that new pop-up window, activate "SMTP server
requires authentication", then select "Log on using" and enter your
*regular* .Mac e-mail address, followed by your password.

See my notes inline.

Once a message is placed in the Outbox, it's supposed to be sent. What do
you expect?

BTW, error 4362 indicates database corruption.

Hi Diane

Thanks for your reply.
Sorry I wasn't very clear had been one of those weeks.
All client main accounts are set up as imap and most staff work for more
then one sub company so have multiple email aliases.
my reply's to questions and points are below.

Did you set up the accounts as pop or imap?

The above is when you set up a pop account as an alias so I didn't put in
the receiving server details, sent items end up in the sent folder on the
local machine not imap sent folder
..
I then tried to set the alias as a imap account so that sent items from the
alias email address show in the sent folder on the imap account not on the
computer sent folder but to get the imap folders to show you need to put in
the receiving server details.
It sounds like you are confused over using aliases.

No think I got the hang of setting it up.
Once a message is placed in the Outbox, it's supposed to be sent. What do
you expect?
It is supposed to be sent but if you get an error it won't send and will
stay in the outbox until you fix the problem, what I'm finding is that under
an imap setup the error message shows then the message vanishes from the
outbox without sending and does not let you fix the problem like re attaching
files on error 4362
BTW, error 4362 indicates database corruption.

According to the error code refrence page here
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/number.html#error4362
error is also listed as this:
Error 4362 can also show:

The message could not be sent. An unknown error (4362) occurred.

If this occurs when sending a message with attachments, open the draft
message window, and remove the attachments. Re-attach the files, and try
sending again.

I find this to be the most common reason for the error and have recently had
it on new databases with only an imap setup
but I have also tried everything it recommends there but it still pops up
regularly, it's not normally a big problem but when the message is then lost
it becomes a problem.

Let me see if I can get someone that actually uses alias accounts for IMAP
to help us here.

Hi Ben,

I hope I've understood everything correctly, as I have not been following
the thread too closely. My recommendation would be to set up an alias
account as POP and create an outgoing rule that moves the sent messages from
the local folder to the IMAP folder. You already know how to create the
alias (POP) account; when you're done, go to Tools>Rules, switch to the
Outgoing tab, create a new rule and enter the following information:

If account is [name of your alias account]
Then move message to [Sent Items folder of your IMAP account]

The message will be stored locally until it is sent, but once the Send
button is hit, it will be uploaded to the IMAP server.

Hope this helps!

Hi Michel

Yep that's done the trick.
Funny thing is, doing a rule was the fist thing I tried but I totally missed
the Outgoing tab so I couldn't get it to work.. You can file that under ID10t
though it would be good to get a better way of doing this.

There is still the vanishing mail problem under imap sending errors but
maybe I can use pop aliases for the main default account for that.
Thanks for your help and quick replies.

I might be off on this, but adjust the IMAP schedule to give you more time.
Even selecting to work off line might be an option.

Glad Michel was able to point you in the right direction.
