IE and ms word 2002

I have strange problem. I mean it's not a problem but just curious if
somebody knows how this can be turned off

Here is what I have. MS Word 2002, IE 6.0 on windows 2000 pro

I have opened word file, now I am trying to open word attachment from
internet explorer
by using "open" from some x url, So it opens that attachment in IE's own
window, now when I hit "Back" button of IE 6, it doesn't go to original
default view of IE (i.e it doesn’t stay in IE window) but throws me on
word application view..

I just wonder why it chooses ms word and not any other application and
also why it just don’t stay in IE itself
