IE requires Win Explorer to access the net

Hello,

(Win98se, IE 6)

I have a problem where IE will not load Web Pages unless I allow WINDOWS
EXPLORER to access the Internet through my Firewall.

I had tried giving IE access to ANY Service and Address, both Remote and
Local, and it still requires WINDOWS EXPLORER FOR IE TO SURF THE WEB !!!

At about the same time OE would not load my Hotmail Accounts saying my
Passwords were worng but I access them with a Web Browser fine so thats
not it.

This may also require WINDOWS EXPLORER to access the Hotmail Accounts
but I have Blocked it in my Firewall.

But my Pop3 Accounts are fine.

I've repaired IE and still the same problem.

I had done a Windows Update right before this happened.

And no I did not use one of those Fake Emails to Update with a Virus in it.

I used the Start Button Windows Update.

I've Scanned for Viruses including Online Scans for anything new and
checked for Malware.

I'm clean.

Has anyone else had this problem ?

Hello everyone,

I found the fix for my problem in another newsgroup and want to share it
here as I posted for help here too.

I hope this will help those that are trying to help others with this and
other problem and is why I'm posting this in all the newsgroups I posted
for help.

For those that can not surf the Web because of this problem I will Copy
and Paste the information here below:

Thanks for the info on the forced install as I might need it someday and
your right about the DLL hell as I did that before and learned to save
them before hand.

The fix JP suggested was for IE 5,5 and earlier but I went in and
checked the Reg Keys anyway.

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE the BrowseNewProcess was set to "YES" as it should be.

But in HKEY_CURRENT_USER the BrowseNewProcess was set to "NO"

This conflict was the problem and when it was set back to YES and I
rebooted it had IE accessing the Net and no sign of Windows Explorer
trying to access the internet !!!!

For those that can't surf the Web with this proglem I will Copy and

There has been much discussion regarding Windows Explorer trying to
access the Internet rather than Internet Explorer. This problem is now
solvable. ZoneAlarms provides a solution at
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/support/zapIssuesFAQ.jsp#2issues.
Problem is if you have IE 5.01 or higher then this solution is no good.
However, MS provides sort of a solution at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;240928. If you
have more than 32 Megs of RAM, then WE and IE are supposed to be opened
as separate windows. It's supposed to be automatic. This is wrong. I
have 128 Megs and this isn't working, and others are having this same
problem, too.

Solution: You have to make a simple little change to the System Registry
File.

First, open the Registry Editor. If you don't know how to do that, then
click on Start, Run, and type in Regedit and then click OK. This is the
Registry Editor. Click on the little plus sign (+) next to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, scroll on down until you find Software and click on
the + for that, then click on the + for Software, then the + for
Microsoft, then the + for Windows, then the + for CurrentVersion, then
the + for Explorer.

Underneath Explorer there should be the entry for BrowseNewProcess. If
you have that entry, then see below on what to do next. If you don't
have that entry, then click on Explorer, then click on Edit, New, Key.
In the box provided, enter BrowseNewProcess exactly as I have typed it.
No spaces. Then press the Enter Key. Now, double click on that entry --
BrowseNewProcess, then click on Edit, New, String Value. In the first
line type BrowseNewProcess, and in the bottom line enter the word YES,
then hit the Enter Key or click OK. (See last paragraph)

If you already have the folder BrowseNewProcess, click on it, and in the
right hand pane, you have BrowseNewProcess and the Data is NO, then
double click on the BrowseNewProcess in the right hand pane. Change the
NO to YES and hit the Enter Key or click OK. See the last paragraph on
what to do next.

If you already have the folder BrowseNewProcess, and in the right hand
pane, you have BrowseNewProcess and the Data is YES, then you have a
problem. Your system isn't recognizing that entry. Here's what you do.
Double click on the BrowseNewProcess in the right hand pane. Change the
data from a YES to a NO. Hit the Enter Key or click OK. Now see last
paragraph on what to do next. When you're up and running again, then go
back into the Registry Editor and go back to the first entry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Double click on the BrowseNewProcess in the right
hand pane, then change the NO to a YES, hit the Entry Key. See the last
paragraph on what to do next and you should be finished.

Last Paragraph: Now repeat the process for HKEY_CURRENT_USER. After
you've done all that close the Editor, and Reboot your computer. You
should now have Windows Explorer on its own and Internet Explorer should
be on its own too.

I hope I've made myself clear and I haven't made a mistake. I hope all
this helps.

I have a similar problem accessing MS Money with a NET
password but have no problem accessing MS Games by Zone
with the same password.
