IE6 takes forever to launch after Windows Update

XP SP1 with all hot fixes (not willing to go to sp2 yet)

I updated a laptop today with all the latest hotfixes and after reboting, IE
6 would take forever to launch - 60 seconds or so.
Entering a different url and loading the new web page also takes much longer
now.
Even simply trying to open the Tools->Options menu takes much longer now.

Prior to doing Windows Update today, launch time for IE was fine - a couple
seconds at worst.

Firefox launches just fine on the same machine and responds quickly (I've
been doing a side-by-side comparision), so I know that it isn't network
congestion causing the problem.

Any thoughts as to why IE 6 is taking so long to launch?

Hi John,

You may want to alson post this in one of the IE or Windowx XP
newsgroups on news://msnews.microsoft.com

Are you perhaps running a security or antivirus software package
that checks each web page as IE is loading it?

Bob,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I run Norton AV, same version as I was using prior to doing the Live
Update.

Note that even if I do things with IE6 that are not 'browser' related, like
simply trying to to open the Tools->Internet Options menus (which are local
to the IE install), it takes15-20 seconds for those menues to open or to
switch between the tabs when they are opened.

No other of my apps (Word, Acrobat, Media Player, etc....) nor does XP
itself exhibit any form of slowdown - just IE6.
