IE7 javascript bug in FP2003 ?

P

PSalmon

I have run into a problem with FP2003 after I installed IE7 this past week. I
work on about 20 webs in FP so I am well versed with FP. I use javascript for
my navigation bars etc...its all coded and works fine, or had been.

After upgrading to IE7 I found that when I go to the preview tab while
working, I get scripting errors. And of course, then you can't see the nav.
menu. If you go to Preview in Browser, you CAN see the javascript menu. And
when I uploaded to the web, the navigational menu is just fine, so it only
appears to be an issue while WORKING IN FRONTPAGE. This is a tad annoying ,
since I have to keeping opening up another preview window to see changes/etc.
and everytime I want to use the preview tab, I have to continiously close the
error windows.

The error message is the same on every page, in every web that I work on.
And nothing has been changed or touched so I know its not my web or the
script.

Error is as follows:
Line 2
Char 1
Invalid Character
Code 0

Makes no sense since line 2, char 1 is <head> nothing wrong with that !!!

So I am totally stumped. I've been searching the web for hours trying to
find if anyone else has run into this bug, is there patch, does MS even know
about it? Their IE7 bug reporting page isn't working so I can't leave feed
back there.

Anyone have any input on this issue.
Thanks for any help
Patti

It may not help much but I have often seen this error (using IE6).

I never knew what to make of it - still don't !!

I have NEVER had the problem before. It worked fine until I upgrade to IE7.

I don't want to download yet another browser and I don't feel there is a
script error. But, if If I wanted to run a script debugger, is there a place
on-line to run the script..its just a small piece of script , no more then 6
lines of text.

You can view the navigational javascript menu once it has been uploaded to
the server and I'm viewing it using IE7, the glitch is IN the Frontpage
softwear itself under the 'preview' option. You would think if its detecting
it in the FP and won't let it run there, , it would do the same thing in the
actual browser but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Bizarre and a pita !!

Download and install the latest version of FireFox.

OK I went ahead and downloaded it on another computer.
Here is what I found.
First off, it doesn't show you exactly where the errors are, only that there
are errors. Second, it doesn't show the same error that I got in FP and
infact, the minor error FF found was only a 'width' tag issue which doesn't
keep the script from running or running properly, EXCEPT in FF...the menu was
off set by a few pixels due to FF issues [sigh] grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr oh why in
heavens did I upgrade to IE7 grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Did you double click one of the errors in the list??

The solution is to use File Menu | Preview in Browser, not the Preview tab, as you are not running
the full IE browser. This is most like related to changes in IE / Explorer security under IE7.

Did you double click one of the errors in the list??
Yes, and they were linked back to some other site , showing say an "example"
of the error which was weird, since it was showing a CSS example and even had
a .cursor listed, which isn't even on that site I was viewing.

I just went back out AGAIN and brought up the site, clicked on Javascript
console and now there are NO errors shown.

So FF was totally useless .
Dang, its an FP2003 glitch associated with the upgrade of IE7...
I did hear "rumors' among the elite of web designing that they were having
javascrip issues, but I didn't really read much of what was said, since I
really didn't think it would affect FP, I assume if there were issues, you
would find them once you uploaded and viewed it in the IE7 browser.

Where do I look to adjust the security...I did think of that, and cruised
around looking but couldn't find anything.....

I don't think it is something that you can change. I had other issues, as well, with IE7 and just
had to un-install it.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm having the same problem with my
homepage. It started in IE6, before I installed IE7 and still persists. One
update somewhere along the line, possibly my .NET framework, or IE Security
Updates, made my fly-in script deativacte in Preview. It's just a pain and a
half to preview it in a new browser, and I still can't figure out how to get
it to work, because the link pathways to those scripts automatically change
back if you try to change them.

Well the javascript code for the fly in is animate.js and I have more than
one copy in different places. So whenever I try to change the pathway to the
desired copy, it doesn't work and reverts to the local copy in the same
folder as the page. And that's the one that crashes the script in the same
manner.
