IE7/Outlook 2003: "Locate Link Browser" dialog box after upgrade

Leon

I have 2 computers: Dell Inspiron 5100 and IBM ThinkPad X31. Both are
running Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 Professional (all latest updates
applied).

Just installed IE7 final version on both. No other browser other than IE
was installed or uninstalled on both systems.

Dell Inspiron 5100: when opening Internet shortcuts from an Outlook 2003
e-Mail message, everything works.

IBM TP X31: the same action leads to "Locate Link Browser" dialog to appear.

I performed exhaustive research and tried all posted suggestions, including
pointing directly to IEXPLORE.EXE, unchecking DDE box (which surprisingly
reverts back, does not accept changes). Nothing works. Reinstallation of
IE7 did not solve the problem either.

Pointing directly to IEXPLORE.EXE causes another error message: Outlook
cannot start the Web browser for [path follows].

The only difference I can detect at this point:

On IBM Thinkpad X31: My Computer / Tools / Folder Options / File Types ...
all URL: file types have IE6 style icon (without orbiting IE7 circular
ring). IE7 is however installed and all URL shortcuts are pointing to IE7
IEXPLORE.EXE in correct directory. Very strange ...

In addition, "Locate Link Browser" dialog appears very quickly when IE7 is
not started. When IE7 is already started, this dialog box does not appear
and nothing happens when an Internet shortcut is clicked in Outlook 2003
message.

On Inspiron 5100: My Computer / Tools / Folder Options / File Types ... all
URL: file types DO HAVE IE7 style icon (WITH orbiting IE7 circular ring).
And everything works.

Sincerely,

I finally solved the problem and would like to share my experience with hopes
that others will benefit from these notes.

The problem was Zone Alarm Pro (Version 6.5.737)

First - I shut down ZA Pro and then all Internet shortcuts in Outlook 2003
began to work.

Solution:

- Unistalled IE7
- Uninstalled ZA Pro
- Installed IE7 again (tested all links -- works just fine)
- Installed ZA Pro again (all links work)

I had the same problem after installing IE7. I have Firefox installed,
too. After installing IE7 I got the "cannot locate link browser" error
when clicking on web links in Outlook 2003 emails.

I navigated the pop-up file open dialog that carried the error and
selected "iexplorer.exe" in my "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer"
directory. This is all it took to work for me.

As an aside, since my IE7 installation, my Google Talk "speech bubble"
icon can no longer launch IE to go to my inbox. Also, it can check my
mail but clicking on a particular email summary notice does not launch
IE so that I can view the mail.
