If a non-BCM item is deleted from exchange, is it deleted from BCM

If I understand correctly, strictly BCM items like phone logs, business
notes, accounts and contacts are maintained locally on my laptop in the sql
database.

I use the notes fields within the regular tasks and appointments to take
meeting notes and track the various steps of some task, and then link them to
a BCM account. Recently, I have been getting emails indicating that my
company's exchange server has been "cleaning things up", and deleting things
that are a certain number of days old. Does this mean that I will eventually
lose those appointment and task notes? I ask because I thought the BCM
somehow makes copies of emails that are stored separately with the BCM
database from the email itself, and am wondering if the same is true for the
more traditional outlook items.

By the way, this is just a one user BCM setup on my laptop. I work for a
big regional bank but I hate the CRM software they've decided is fabulous, so
I made my own with BCM.

BCM stores its own items in its database. However, with Outlook/
Exchange items (emails, appointments, etc) it just stores a link to
the original data and a few fiedls describing it. If the original item
gets deleted, BCM/Outlook won't be able to open it.

Thanks for the reply! What if I auto archive them occasionally to prevent
them from being deleted? Does the link follow them into the autoarchive
folder?

I haven't tried it but you experiment.

I would expect that Outlook items would have the same ID number
wheteher they are archived or not.

Finally got around to messing with this. Created a new pst (so as not to be
messing with my real one), created a new appt and linked it to a dummy record
in my existing BCM database. The act of archiving the entire new pst (which
consists of one appt) did not seem to change anything in terms of the link,
but if I am not mistaken that's probably because BCM is still only paying
attention to the one in the PST, not the archive. The act of deleting it from
the calendar turns it into an uneditable Business Activity within my dummy
contact record, but it seems to retain all of the notes and info. in other
words, it opens up with all of my info, but has a green "notebook" icon
instead of the calendar one. Typing in a field just generates error noises.
Not ideal, but it will work in my situation. My company will delete
anything older than 6 mos, so I am auto archiving anything older than 5. I
just won't be able to change anything about a record after it turns 6 months
old.

Hope this is helpful to someone, and please keep the info flowing if anyone
figures out something else.

Forget it. I have recently discovered that the archiving process randomly
and unrepeatably clears the notes field from calendar/task items. In other
words, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Since losing one note means
that the entire system is unreliable, back to square one. I have never been
so frustrated with a computer problem, lterally trying to iron out bugs for
over a year now on BCM. I'm ready to go back to pen and paper. Not to mention
how much time I was wasted on microsoft.
