I have 1,2,3,4,5 for cells A2,B2,C2,D2, and E2. I'm trying to figure
function wherein the first cell on row 2 that contains a number wil
result in ABC for A1 and the rest (i.e. B1,C2,D2,and E2) will result i
ZZZ.

in A1 try:
=IF(COUNTIF($A$2:A2,">0")=1,"ABC",IF(COUNTIF($A$2:A2,">0")>1,"ZZZ",""))
and drag to the right
