If I don't use Exchange, why is Outlook "synchronizing folders"?

All the Help topics I can find speak of synchronization in the context
of Exchange. I don't use Exchange, but the icon in the status bar says
"synchronizing folders" for hours and hours.

Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks.
