IF including a variable cell number

Is it possible to write a formula using IF including a
variable cell number. Example, if I wanted to begin IF
(C*=C*+1,B1,"0") where the * represents a variable. I was
writing longer formulae but they stop at 7, this variable
would solve my problem. Thanks.
