In Word 2000 under windows XP how should the if statement read so that

Additional details on what you are trying to accomplish will help us
out a lot. :)

Where do you want to place said IF statement? In a UserForm? In the
main merge document?

What do you mean by form letter? Are you referring to text that
various between documents or an entirely different form letter?
