Ignoring a portion of table titles in TOC

Is there a way to replace a portion of table titles in the TOC (for example,
by adjusting the position counter at the point where the row of dots would
start (the dots that are generated to start at the end of the table title and
run to the start of the page number) so that the dots start earlier in the
line, thereby obliterating/replacing the last, say, 10 characters from the
table title? The full title needs to stay with the table in the text, but
the last word needs to be "hidden" in the TOC.

Hi Joe,

No. You'll have to modify the heading in the Table (eg by putting the 'problem' word in a borderless textbox or another cell [eg by
splitting the cell] with a different applied Style)

Not sure this will work. How can I make the problem word not appear on the
first page of the table and not in the TOC, but have it appear in any
continuation pages? I know how to add the text box, but that would show up
on the initial page of the table as well. You mention splitting the cell (I
assume this is so the basic table title can be in a header (cell); but if I
put the "(cont)" in another cell, can I keep it from showing up on the first
page of the table?

Hi Joe,

Splitting the cell and using different Styles to limit which part of the table header appears in the ToC is easy enough, but now
you've introduced something entirely different - keeping the same text from appearing on the 1st page of the table (I assume you're
using 'Heading Rows Repeat'). That can't be done using Word's table tools. There are various workarounds, but whether any of them
will work for you depends on whether the table starts at the top of the page.
