iis setup required for visual web developer

Hello,

I have been pulling my hair out trying to setup IIS 6 for use with
Visual Web Developer. I admittedly have no idea what I'm doing. I am
a developer and have no idea about server setup... I have been assigned
the task of setting up IIS 6 so that we can use Visual Web Developer.

My objective is to setup something that will allow me to access the
files on our remote webserver to create a development area and a
production area (both on the same server... it must be this way because
we are a very small company). We want the development web to be public
on the Internet so we can all view it.

Firstly, I do not understand all the concepts. I'd like to know what
is best to achieve access to the filesystem on the remote server: FTP,
Frontpage server extensions, Webdav or fileshares. I get the
impressions that FPSE are going to become depricated, thus I'd rather
work with webdav, I guess.

So, I tried creating a virtual directory in IIS on the remote server
named webdav pointing to the root of all our website code. That
resulting in an error something like "Cannot create subweb because you
entered an alias, please enter the full url" Clearly I have no idea
whats going on.

I tried using FTP instead, but that would just make Visual Web
Developer hang for about 10 minutes before anything would happen. I
have seen this problem described before in Visual Web Developer forums.

So do you know how to properly setup a website in IIS so that it can be
used with Visual Web Developer or VS.NET?

Thanks!
NL

You need to post to the Windows Server, IIS and Visual Web Developer newsgroups for help.

And if you're trying to set up a public web server then you might want to
consider hiring someone to help you because if you're not familiar with the
concepts you're going to have a lot of security issues that could expose
your company if you open up your server to the public and you don't set it
up correctly. There are a LOT of things to consider when setting up a
production server.
