Illegal instruction message

I have Windows XP and while working in various applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, the internet, etc., the following message box periodically pops up:
"16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem - C:\DOCUME~1\jferello\LOCALS~1\Temp\f8594125.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:Odaf IP:0174 OP:ff fd 1f 58 5d Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."
This has happened randomly and in all applications. Sometimes I am unable to close it and Task Manager shows it "running." If I try to close it using Task Manager, it freezes all applications. It also accumulates hundreds of Temp files in my "C" drive and my PC begins to run slower - I delete the temp files daily. (I am using versions 2002 of Outlook, Word, Access, Excel, Publisher) My MIS support can't seem to troubleshoot this problem, can someone shed some light on what to do? Thanks.
