Illegal Instruction message

I have Windows XP with version 2002 of Outlook, Publisher, Word, Excel, Access. While in any of the above applications or on the internet the following message pops up randomly:
"16 bit MS-DOS Sybsystem C:\DOCUME~1\(my screenname)\LOCALS~1\Temp\f8594125.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:Odaf IP:0174 OP:ff fd 1f 58 5d Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."
Sometimes it won't close and Task Manager shows it's status as "running," and when I try to close it that way it freezes all applications. It also stores hundreds of files in TEMP, making my PC run slower so I delete the TEMP files daily. My MIS support is unable to troubleshoot - can someone solve this problem? Thanks!

This isn't the exact same error message, but since you haven't received any responses yet, I thought I'd toss it out. Maybe it will give you some ideas. I suspect the NTVDM in your message could be related to video drivers.

Oh, wait. Added NTVDM to my Google search of microsoft.com and turned up a number of hits. Maybe this will help your MIS staff track it down.

But what is that oddly named exe doing in the tmp folder?, and 'hundreds' of
tmp files?
Do you have a decent AV app?
Download, update, and run both Adaware and SpyBot - google for -
