Illegal operation

When I insert the cursor in the seach box in the toolbar of my Outlook 2000 Contacts I immediately get a notice of "This programme has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" which is what happens when I clisk on OK. This is a recent thing, and it makes Outlook pretty useless. Anybody know what I can do to put this right?
