illegal operations and volunteer resets

I have been writing a long document in Word 2000 (755kb),
using Windows 98SE. Recently, when I insert or alter
text in the middle of the document, I either get a
illegal operations warning, which results in the program
being shut down, or the machine has reset itself. Either
way, I can't seriously work on the document and it's
vitally important. My geek friends thought it might be a
stability problem, so I did a wipe and reload, upgrading
to Windows XP. When I had the software back on and
brought the file up, it did the same things again. Any
ideas out there? Thanks in advance.
