Image editing.

People, To get an image that has no background, ie the default white, or the
appearance the object has no background, floating alone (I cant think of
another way to describe it) Do you need image software, Photo shop etc. I
take photos of stock for our web site but depending on the time of day,
without a dedicated mini photographic studio, the backgrounds always differ.
I assume there is software that will cut out the object leaving it without
any or a chosen background colour.
Thanks John

What you are wanting is either a "transparent GIF" or a "transparent PNG",
both the GIF and PNG formats support transparency. Lots of good tutorials
out there. Google for "transparent GIF" to get a bunch.

Yes, in my opinion, you should have some image editing software. Learning
how to prepare and optimize images for web use is one of the skills you
should develop if you are building a webpage. I have never found the tools
in Publisher adequate for editing images. Here is a freebie that would
probably help:
http://www.irfanview.com/
And if you were to buy one, I like Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Pub 2003 also has "set transparent color" on the Picture Tool Bar, that
might help you do what you want. I always format images in a third party
image program, and don't use that tool or others in Publisher, and don't
know much about them. Perhaps under Publisher help, type "transparent" for
more information?
