Image file to .docx

Hi,

Using scan in Vista Ultimate for an HP scanner only allows the file to
be scanned as an image file,(i.e. .jpg,.bmp,.tiff).
Is there a way, in Word 2007, to convert an image file to .docx format?
Basically, have a 7 page asset list that I lost from a corrupted flash
drive, and have an HP scanner.
Would love to just be able to scan it to a word doc, instead of typing it all
into Word 2007, but the basic HP scanner driver for Vista only has image
files for choices?
Any help?

Bob,

Thanks,
As you point out however, doesn't look like Office 2007 tools has Document
Imaging in it.
Any ideas why?
I might try to install the HP scanner app from XP into Vista using
compatability mode and see if that helps.

Bob,
Found it,
it's not installed by default, but in the custom tab for Office install, you
can choose Document Imaging, and even Scanning.
Gonna try it now!!!!
Thanks for the hints/tips!!!

The doc needs to be scanned using OCR (Opticla Character Recognition)
software in order to directly render an editable text document or rendered
as a graphic & OCR'd afterwards. There used to be a program called MS
Document Imaging in Office 2003, but I can't locate it in 2007 & it isn't
supplied with Vista. You might start here & see if you can find out if it
will do you any good:

Unless you have a *very* old scanner I'm surprised you don't have some sort
of OCR app - it probably isn't a built-in function but it should be included
with your installation disk. Check your user's guide/documentation.

Bob,

Not easy, but, recovered my list without having to type it in.
Scanned as .tiff>used MSFT Document Imaging(that I installed to the HD using
the custom install option) to convert it to .htm(thats what it did by
default-sent to docs;using OCR)>then Saved As .docx.
Bingo
Then backed it up to a cd!!!-darn flashdrive!!!
Thanks again for your help. :)

Bob,
Just a follow up for you.

Further searching revealed this- Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) .
This is from Technet-
This topic lists the changes in Microsoft Office Word 2007 from Microsoft
Office 2003.

MODI
Description: The Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) tool set and code
dependencies on MODI are removed.
Reason for change: This technology is replaced with XPS.
Migration path: Online fax vendors or others who rely on MODI technology can
either download MODI or update their applications to use the new XPS
technology.
