image maps

I'm having trouble getting the image mapped areas to highlight. When I
select the option to highlight, the whole picture disappears and all I see
are the rectangles of where I put the hyperlinks. I thought the areas were
supposed be highlighted. Would appreciate any help on this.

You don't select Highlight Hot spots (that just reveals existing ones)
- You select one of the Hotspot shapes next to it
( and use the shape to draw a new hotspot)

I'm still not getting the results I want. I have a large picture that I made
hot spots in several places. I opened the pictures tool bar, and drew a new
hot spot next to one of the hot spots, but that still doesn't put a frame
around the area. I also tried adding adding a shape on top of it from the
Draw toolbar and it hides the hyperlink. I can't figure out what I'm doing
wrong.

Once you draw the hotspot does a hyperlink dialog box come up? You're not
trying to overlap the hotspots are you? If you switch to Code View do you
see the <area href ...... </map> tags? Do you see the usemap ="#FPMap0"
line on your image tag? Also, when you click on the image you should see
the hotspot areas you already created.

You may need to reinsert the image and start over to see if there's a
problem with the original image.

I do get the dialog box, I add the hyperlink. Now, I want to draw attention
to the area on the map that is a hot spot...like putting a border around it.
In the Front Page help about image maps, the example is of a car...it shows
boxes around the hot spot areas, like the windshield, the lights, the tires
so users know they can click in that area. That is what I am trying to do.
How can I do this?

Ah. In the help example you're looking at
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011753301033.aspx) they
aren't making visible borders that people can see. They're just showing it
to you in red so you can see where they drew the image map hotspots. Those
boxes wouldn't be visible on the site. What you can do is open the drawing
toolbar, draw a box (or shape) around the area where you have the hotspot
and then right-click on the shape and in the properties set the background
color to No Fill.

Don't do the hyperlink first.

Use your picture hotspot tool to do the drawing. then, when you're
finished, it will let you do the hyperlink.

Use the polygonal tool to draw free-hand. Click it at each point you want
the line to start and stop. When you finally connect to the staring point,
your hotspot will be complete and it will allow you to put in the link.

I tried that ... I drew a shape over the hot spot area, I also tried it with
a layer and a shape ... both cover/override the hyperlink. I guess all I can
do is start with a picture that has boxes around the hot spot areas, if that
is the only option.
