Images are not displayed properly

I have repeatedly found that images from PC word documents (different
versons) are not displayed in Word X. They will not be printed, too. Instead,
a red cross is displayed and printed. What is the problem and how can it be
solved?

This is a famous question. With many many famous answers. Try google
groups.
e.g.
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search
put 'red x' in the exact phrase tab and
microsoft.public.mac.office.word in the newsgroup tab
