Images captions, wrong numbering

I am writing my thesis and I am fighting with word, because it messes up
numbers.

Everything is ok until the 4th image of the current chapter (3rd chapter).
As soon as I try to insert the 5th image word messes everything up and
there is no way to get it working properly. This is what I do to insert
an image:

1. insert image from file
2. the image appears under the text, so I do the following:
a. right click on it and choose format
b. size: width 5,94 cm (constrain proportions)
c. layout: choose the second option, in italian is "Incorniciato"
(maybe framed?) (alignment => other)
3. insert reference => caption
4. then I insert the text and click OK

Untill the 4th image everything is OK, every image has its own nice
caption that says "Figure 3.4: images description".

Starting with the 5th image happens what follows:

in the caption's dialog box I see the proper numbering which is 3.5; but
as soon as I insert my text and click on OK, under the image appears a
wrong numbering, 3.6 instead of 3.5 and the word increases the numbering
of every image belonginng to the 3rd chapter by one (for every image up
to the current).

Please note that I am using the italian version of word, so it is
possible that I used the wrong translation for certain options. Anyhow,
I hope that I've been clear enough :D

Thanks for your help

"I hope that someone gets my... message in a bottle!" :D

I am still fighting against word (2002 SP3), and there is no way to get
it working properly.

I could even send you the .dot model I am using so that you can verify
what is happening.

No way, every image I insert is screwing the numbering of all the
previous captions. I thought this was limited to certain images, while I
noticed that it happens with every sibgle image.

Thanks

Are you tracking changes? That can certainly cause unexpected caption
(SEQ field) numbering, which won't be resolved until you've accepted the
changes.

Note also that if captions are in frames, the order of the numbers
depend on the location of the frame anchors in text, not the position of
the frames. The same applies to text boxes.

Sorry, can you explain this better? I am not sure that I've understood
what yo mean.

I am not using frames as far as I know, then everything is possible :D

This is what I do to insert an image:

1. place the caret where I want to insert the image
2. insert => image from file
3. once the image is inserted (it gets under the text) i right click on
it and:
a. layout: "framed" and aligned to left (in italian it says
"incorniciato", it is the second icon in the layout tab
4. insert => reference => caption

The caption is in the form "Figura 1.1" here 1.1 stands for chapter.img
The code for the field is the following:

{STYLEREF 1 \s} {SEQ Figura \* ARABIC \s 1 }

If you need more details, please let me know. I could even send you the
..dot model or the .doc file I am working on if you could analye it (them) :D

Thanks for your support

Ok, now I've understood your question and the answer is no. I am not
tracking changes. I've never used this feature in my life.

From your description, I'd say that the images are "floating" in the
drawing layer; this means that the captions will be added in
(border-less) text boxes. It will be easier to see the text boxes if you
display text boundaries.

You may also want to display object anchors, in order to find out to
which paragraphs the images and text boxes are anchored. Again, the
order of the anchor paragraphs determines the numbering.

However, if a numbering is being skipped, something else must be going
on. Obviously this is difficult to trouble-shoot from a distance, so
feel free to send me the document if you want. You can use
(e-mail address removed).

Note: To display text boundaries and object anchors, use the appropriate
options on the View tab of Tools | Options.

OK, I've sent you an email with bot the word model and the doc I am
working on.

I've done so, but I was not able to get things sorted. :'(

As a follow-up, I'd like to mention that the OP sent me the document and
there was nothing obviously strange about it. It did have captions in
text boxes, though.

Since numbering of captions in text boxes or frames depends on the
relative positions of the anchors, I suggested dragging
the anchors to get the numbering in the correct order. I also suggested
converting text boxes to frames or, alternatively, using inline objects
and captions wrapped by a frame for positioning purposes.

The OP pointed out that the Caption dialog box kept showing incorrect
numbering, which could be fixed by updating the fields after insertion.
I suspect this has been around for awhile (I've seen it at least in Word
2000 as well), but I don't recall if there was a solution to the
problem. Anyway, a work-around is to insert the caption in an ordinary
text paragraph (and use a frame for positioning, if necessary).
