Images disappear from saved doc when source files are deleted

Hi,

I have noticed that Pictures inserted into a Word doc dissappear when the
source files are deleted. Even if the Word doc is Saved prior to the original
pictures being deleted.

What I see when I load the doc after the pics are deleted are red X's. I
have tried to recreate this on my friends machine but I am unable.

If I delete the iamge files after I save them in the .doc on his machine
they still show up when I reload the .doc

Anyidea what setting I must have changed to cause the deleted pics to
disappear?

If the images are linked rather than embedded, this is what I would expect
to see when fields are updated.
