Images displaying as black boxes in Mac PPT

Hi, everyone -

I've searched this discussion group for info on this question and it doesn't
look like there are any posts for my problem (although someone had the
reverse problem but their solution didn't apply to my situation!).

I have a presentation that was originally created in the Windows version and
it has a very large number of images (it wasn't created by me, however).
Everything displays fine in the Windows PPT but when it is opened on a Mac,
those images come up as the dreaded black box. I work with a lot of PPT
presentations that are used on both platforms and usually the graphics
display fine on both machines. These graphics were in .JPG format and
imported individually.

I've tried saving the Windows version in every possible format, but as soon
as I open the file in Mac PPT, no graphics. I don't know what to do with the
file on the Mac side since I don't really have anything to work with, so I'm
thinking I need to do something with the Windows version that will preserve
the images. All I have for image files are what has been imported into Win
PPT, so I don't think that re-creating the entire presentation (approx 945
slides with graphics) would even be a viable option, even if I did want to
torture myself further.

Does anyone out there have any recommendations or suggestions? I am running
Office Professional Edition 2003 on Windows, and that version of Powerpoint
is 2003, Service Pack 1. On the Mac side I've tested it out both in OSX and
OS 9 with the same results. In OSX I'm running PPT for the Mac 2004, version
11.2 and in OS 9 I'm running OS 9.2.2; Powerpoint is 2001, service release 1.

Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Sometimes this can result from using CMYK JPG images in PowerPoint.

In any case, try this:

Open the presentation in Windows PPT.
Select one of the problem images.
Choose Edit, Copy from the main menu bar.
Again from the main menu bar, choose Edit, Paste Special; pick PNG as the paste
type.

Save the presentation, then open it on the Mac side. Does the newly pasted
image work ok where the original did not?

Hello Holly,

Would you mind sending me or posting a small presentation containing a
couple of these problematic images (not all 945) along w/the original JPEG
files? Also, were these images straight off a digital camera or did they
get edited by some app(s)? If the latter, can you tell me app(s) what wrote
out to these files?

I'd like to investigate this issue further. To email me, remove the online.
part after the @ sign.

Thanks,
Andrew
