Images don't display in designer

Frankly I'm so fed up that I'd just as soon have my money back as get this
fixed!

Configuration
Gateway 1450
Windows XP Professional
MS Office 2003 Professional
Front Page 2003 (piece of siht)

When I select insert picture from file then select a JPG file from the same
folder as the htm document I'm editing it DOES NOT DISPALY in the designer
view. What I see is only a 16x16 pixel icon with the circle square and
tryangle in it. IT DOES display corectly in preview! I can right click it
and modify image properties until I'm blue in the fingers. I can repeat this
with any image file with the same results. On rare occasions I have added
several images to a new page with no problems until I tried to make changes
to the same file the next day when the same behavior occurred. (except that
the icons were displayed the same size as the pictures should be. I have
tried this in web pages where the image file URL is like
http://www.myserver.com/mypicture.jpg and I have tried this in local webs
where the image file is c:\projects\myweb\mypicture.jpg AND IT STILL DOES NOT
WORK!

I have tried removing all Office products then reinstalling them WITH NO
CHANGE!

I have tried Reading the fckunig manual and following it step by step.

What's most anoying about this is that if I go upstairs and use my GF's
computer with FrontPage 2002 it works fine! In fact I didn't have any
problems until I rebuilt this system with XP Pro and Office Pro, both retail
versions.

I tried asking here for help before only to be told that I should not be
using anything other than letters numbers and the - character in my file
names and folders. While that may be true ( I don't know but it's not an
issue with FP 2002 ) applying this suggestion was of absolutely no help!

Although I'm tempted to refute your remarks (which are in bad taste I may
add).
You need to get your pictures somewhere within the web. This is proper
doncha think? Do you want users to look for your pic in your C: drive?
You can get them there anyway you like, drag/drop, Import, etc., but they
MUST reside in your web in order to display. /Images/ is a good place to
start.

Make sure that the JPG image was saved in RGB subformat and not CMYK subformat.

Hi Eleanor,
I respect your vast knowledge regarding graphics. Myself I'm not a graphics
person.
However this constant YOU MUST USE IMPORT routine just isn't true.
Any way you get your photos, pics, whatever, works just fine. Save as from
your graphics editor works too. I constantly receive email attachments that
I save-as directly to a web folder and FrontPage has no problem with it.
Explorer- copy paste, drag/drop no problemo.
Although I will admit that using the import feature is helpful when you're
working on the open site. Just my 2 cents worth......well maybe 3.

BTW if you transfer a file outside of FP while it's open, you can refresh
the folders and your file will show up.

That might work with new files (it usually does for me) but it will not work
when replacing files - and recalculating hyperlinks sometimes does not pick
up the modified file; and it does not work for everybody - you only have to
read the many posts regarding image links pointing to the C drive instead of
the web to see this (though the problem here is often the image was
inserted on the page before being brought into the web by any means.)

Considering all the users who read this newsgroup (posters and lurkers,
experienced and inexperienced) it is better to give best practices that
should always work for everybody, rather than practises that will work for
some, but not on every occasion.

you probably
1) need the web you're working in open
2) import the image you want to insert.

:Best Practices" ... YES.... and that means importing.... less problems that
way.

Thankyou all for your feedback.

Wes, I'm sorry if I offended you.

I'm more than a little miffed at Uncle Bill after shelling out $200 for a
product I have to uninstall and replace with my girlfirends older version
(including installing two update licences so I have to install it three
times) just so I can be productive. I'm miffed that a MS rep in this group
told me that it was my fault because I used the _ character in a file name,
something that FP 2002 has no problem with. For the record, all my file and
folder names are now letters and numbers only, begin with a letter, are less
than or equal to 13 characters in length and all fully qualified URLs are
less than 128 characters.

Thomas, Yes the JPG images are RGB. good suggestion though, most users I
encounter don't know about this little tidbit.

Andrew, thanks for the feedback. When I troubleshoot I like to go back to
the basics too.

Elanore, Excellent resource! Unfortunately, the url you posted here
[http://www.eleanorstravels.com/usingphotos.htm] is a broken link. Yes, I
always start by importing the images to a folder. I like to place an
index.html file in the image folder with thumbnailed links to each picture.
that's where the problems begin. When I insert a picture on a page, I can't
see it in design view to use the thumbnail tool. If I click on preview, the
full size image shows up just fine. Take my girlfriends site
www.plantlady9.com This was all done with FP2002 but if I open the site with
FP2003, none of the images display in design view, only in preview or with a
browser.

What I'm forced to do is work offline in Photoshop and then manually edit
the code. This is necessary for complex projects like www.chowfoods.com but
it's time consuming and labor intensive. I bought FP2003 so that I could be
more productive and it's not working out.

The link to my page works just fine for me. I wonder what the problem is???

I don't understand why your last statement is so. Can you offer a bit more
of an explanation, please.
