images don't preview, but publish OK

FP 2002; NT 4 SP6

After working on a web for a few days, images suddenly do not show in
Preview mode. However, they publish to the site and display fine.

If I source one of the non-displaying images from outside the web, forcing
FP to re-save it to "Images", that image Previews correctly. However, if I
try to source an image from its existing location within the web (Images
file) it still won't Preview. Any idea what's going on here?
