Images from browsers

When I copy-paste (or special paste) an image from Safari into Word X,
and save the document, it cannot display nor print on a PC (Word 2000
or 2003). Instead it says: Compressed with Quicktime, Tiff imagee
bla-bla...

If I do the same using Internet Explorer, then the document with
display and print on the same PC.

What are the reasons for this behaviour? Is there a way of configuring
Safari for no problems when switching to a PC?

I suspect the images in Safari are copied in PICT (which is not
supported on PCs) or atleast using QuickTime compression (which is not
supported in Windows either).
IE on the other hand, might parse the original format to the clipboard.

I'm not sure you can really do anything with Safari other than
downloading the images and importing them in Word.
You could try drag and drop from Safari to Word though. That might do
the trick (though I haven't tried myself).

What about converting the PICTs to JPEGs using GraphicConverter or the like?

Sure, but then it means copying from Safari, creating a new image from
clipboard in GC, cinverting, copying, going to Word and pasting.... It'd
be faster (and easier) to drag the image to the desktop and back to word
to avoid copying as PICT. (or directly drag and drop between the two
apps as I suggested).
