Images in Outlook e-mail

Occassionally, I receive an e-mail with embedded images that do not display
in the Outlook e-mail messages. It happens about 1 in every 20 or so
e-mails. Instead of the image displaying, there is a box where the image
limits should be a small red 'x' in the upper left corner. It gets kind of
frustrating at times because I have missing images and don't know what to do
to get them to display. Then I also get calls from friends with the same
problem and cannot advise them.

Today was the ultimate in frustration though. I received an e-mail in my
Microsoft 2003 Outlook Inbox from Microsoft Office Group advertising
Microsoft Outlook 2007 - and guess what. All of the images were missing and
I got nothing but the blank boxes with the little red "x" in the upper left
hand corner.

What can a guy do?

Hi Terry,

To protect your privacy from junk e-mail senders, Microsoft Office Outlook
2003 is configured by default to block image downloads from the Internet. A
blocked image appears as a red X placeholder.

Do one of the following:

Show all blocked images in the message

Click the InfoBar (InfoBar: Banner near the top of an open e-mail message,
appointment, contact, or task. Tells you if a message has been replied to or
forwarded, along with the online status of a contact who is using Instant
Messaging, and so on.) at the top of the message, and then click Download
Pictures.

Notes

If you want the message to show the images the next time you open the
message, save the message.
To change the default so that Outlook doesn't block images in all messages,
click Change Automatic Download Settings, and then clear the Don't download
pictures or other content automatically in HTML e-mail check box.

I opened the e-mail in question and there is no banner at the top like there
are in many other HTML e-mails that I get. Also, opened the security options
and noticed that I had checked the box that allows images to be displayed for
senders defined in the Safe Senders List in the Junk e-mail filter. I have
"@microsoft.com" and "@newsletters.microsoft.com" listed in my safe senders
list, so Outlook should allow those images to display. Nonetheless, I tried
unchecking all of the boxes in the Automatic Downloads dialog box. It still
will not display the images in the e-mail from @newsletters.microsoft.com.

Terry, OK, first thing to ask is, are you at home or at work? If you are at
work, it is most likely your mailserver is stopping the images from being
shown, if you went into the security settings and unchecked all the boxes for
downloading pictures, be sure the close and reopen outlook. Another
possibility is you have a third party program that is interferring or you may
have a virus. Most likely though, after unchecking the boxes for Automatic
download settings...close and reopen outlook.

Closing and reopening Outlook solved the problem (I should have thought of
that). Thanks for your input.
