Images not displayed in Word 2007

Hi. I'm using Word 2007 with MS Windows XP Service Pack 2 on an Lenovo T60
Laptop. For the last several weeks graphics images in MS word do not appear
on screen. This is true for photos, clip art, and even Word Art. The images
show up if the document is printed, or if I look at the document in "print
preview," but if I look at the document in "Print Layout" or "Draft" mode,
the images are not visible. All I will see is a frame where the image should
be. Any thoughts on how to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Bob

I don't know if anyone from Microsoft's usability reads these, but I looked
at "Word Options" about 500 times assuming that there was some box that
needed to be checked or unchecked to get my images showing. I never imagined
that that problem had to do with what you pointed out, i.e."Office Button |
Word Options | Advanced: Show document content. Make sure that "Show picture
placeholders" is not checked."

That strikes me as very poor software design.

Thanks again.

How would you have worded it?

There are two settings that deal with images; one used to be just
"Drawings," and this at least has been improved to "Show drawings and text
boxes on screen," though it may still not be clear that it refers to
*anything* in the drawing layer, which includes wrapped graphics.

The "picture placeholders" setting applies only to inline graphics. It could
be called "Show inline images," but most users wouldn't know what that
means, and the fact is that it's not a matter of just showing them or not
but of showing the images versus showing a placeholder. This is a very old
control that predates the ability to apply text wrapping to images (in
earlier versions they had to be in text boxes, and before there were text
boxes, they had to be in frames), so at one time it was the *only* on-off
control for pictures as opposed to actual drawing objects (lines, circles,
etc.).
