I have had this problem on three different computers - one with the Windows
2000 operating system, one with Windows NT 4.0 operating system, and one with
Windows XP.
Basically the image appears when you insert a jpg, but as soon as you start
scrolling up and down the document (or indeed press Return or write a few
paragraphs) the image disappears and all that I can see is a bounding box
indicating that the image is there. It does not appear in Print Preview but
if I export the document as a PDF I can then see and print the image.
Margins are Word's default (and I generally use a minimum of 2.54 cm
anyway).
On all the computers I looked up the relevant support documentation and I
use Print Layout as the viewing option anyway. I was using Microsoft Word
2000 on the work computer and Word for Works 2002 at home, now I have Word
2003 and the same issue appears in all versions.
I have tried adjusting the hardware accelleration to no avail, I have
adjusted the settings in Word so that picture placeholders are not showing
and the object was set so that Drawings were checked in Options, also the
layout was set to In Line with Text.
To add insult to injury I love Word and Office but have been forced to use
Open Office to write my e-books - because Open Office displays the images
correctly.
I would suggest that since I have seen this issue on a number of operating
systems with different graphics cards that it is a Word problem and nothing
to do with either XP SP2 or a graphics card. The fact that Open Office is
able to display and handle the images and that I do a lot of graphics and web
work using Paint Shop Pro and am not experiencing this issue with anything
else also suggests to me that this is not related to operating systems and
graphics cards.
My computer at home is a Pentium IV 3.19 Mhz with 250 GB hard drive and 1 GB
ram. The work computer is at the moment Windows 2000 with 512 MB RAM, around
9 GB hard drive and I am not sure of the speed but it's a Pentium III.
I am posting this as additional information to the Microsoft people who may
be involved in working on this issue because I believe it does need to be
resolved.
Today I experimented with importing BMP's and GIF's as well as clipart and a
JPG and the same issue appeared with all of them.
I do hope that someone can come up with an answer!
