Images not showing from site

We are using Publisher 2003, created a site, previewed the site from the
local hard drive and all works fine. I uploaded the files using Windows
Explorer's FTP capabilities since when doing the upload via Publisher (using
dial-up) caused Publisher to freeze. Once the files were uploaded I tried to
view the pages. The pages come up but most of the time the images don't show
up which is what I am attempting to figure out why they are not showing even
though they are physically available and in the right path i.e. index_files.

The domain
www.sharedhopeforhealing.com
was created in Adobe Homesite and is working just fine.

The site created in Publisher
www.sharedhopeforhealing/publisher/index.htm
is the problem site.

Note: We want to move to Publisher rather then my Homesite created site
because there is a need for users to be able to update the site and Homesite
of course is not in the same realm i.e. no content management per-say as in
Publisher.

Any thoughts to why the images are not being displayed would be great!!!

Publisher generates an index.htm file and a index_files folder containing
the other pages and supporting images. If you have some images showing and
others that aren't, then its possible that you need to compress the images
before uploading. Right now your link is not working at all.

Also go to tools > Options > web tab and uncheck "Rely on VML..." and "Allow
PNG...". This will help the loading speed. And be sure to use Publish to the
Web to generate your HTML files.

he left out the .com part of the url.
the images eventually do load, i suspect the are very large files and need
to be optimized.

I tried loading in Firefox and none of the links work and there are no
pictures but it seams to work ok in IE.
The other site works OK in both FF and IE

I don't think anyone has ever accused Publisher of creating webs that are
crossbrowser compatible...this is a fine example.

I got the woman to download the service pack at MS and after two hour
download on dial-up it asked for disc-2 of Office 2000 rather then Office
2003. One might ask if I clicked on the wrong SP but I allows Microsoft
update wizard decide. Well then guess I am to blame for letting it decide :)

Rob, you are correct in regards to large images (along with DavidF) although
the interesting things is, I can not get them to load at all under AOL but on
my test computer with 128MB on Windows ME it loads in no time at all (well
for large images).

I want to thank everyone who has assisted in this manner!!! Its communities
such as this which make a difference across the globe. Hope I can return the
favor in this forum or better yet my forte in the VB.NET forums.

I've read the comments and followed the steps but when I compress my images
and click the compress button again, it appears that my changes have not
taken affect as the original settings are still there (200dpi). Any
thoughts???

Kevin,
It is the Publisher site which shows as text only and no links in
Firefox.
The site you say was made in Adobe seems to work just fine.
I have no idea why the Pub site does not work but there are many sites
including my own (not very compicated) that work fine in Firefox.

Kevin,

AOL is a special bird. If memory serves, doesn't AOL use a "web
accelerator"? The way that works is to reduce the quality of images, or even
stop the downloading of images.

Are you sure she is using Pub 2003 and not 2000? Perhaps you should download
the whole service pack rather than using the update feature. Of course that
is about 19 megs, so I would do it with a broadband connection.

Try Publish to the Web, and direct the HTML output to your computer some
where you can find it. Go into the index_files folder and check the size and
resolution there.

In the best of all worlds, you would resize and optimize the images before
you insert them into Publisher. Calculate the pixel width you need based on
your design, and reduce the resolution to 96 dpi, and then that pixel width,
save at around 30% compression (to start with), and insert that image to see
what you get, as compared to the original after compressing. I suggest 96
dpi, because Publisher outputs images at that resolution.

If you don't have an image editing program, irfanview is a good freebie:

AOL is a microcosm of the net and wierd things can happen in there

Thank you for the feedback David. Thanks for the Irfanview tip too :)

As for making sure that all of my files upload, I seem to having difficulty
having all of them load. I'm using Go Daddy's file swap and I'm not sure if
it takes a long time (3+ minutes) to upload 42MB or what. I probably have 50+
pics on my website now so I'll prolly follow your suggestion and compress
them first, and then replace them in my website.

Thanks again and I'm sure I'll be back wit more questions!

You are welcome. 42MB is huge! That would take me about 3 and a half hours
using dial up!

Yes, it will take a while to do it, but you really should resize and
optimize your images using Irfanview, or some other photo editing program,
before you insert them.

If you look at your first page:
http://www.sharedhopeforhealing.com/publisher/index.htm you are using
pictures that display at about 200 to 300 pixels wide. And it looks like you
have compressed them since you first posted this site for our review,
because if you look at
http://www.sharedhopeforhealing.com/publisher/index_files/image1044.jpg that
image is now 699 X 466 and 147 KB. And the bigger one:
http://www.sharedhopeforhealing.com/publisher/index_files/image975.jpg is
1068 X 712 and 367 kb, instead of the close to 1.5 meg size you had it. Big
improvement and good job!

Perhaps that is enough, and you are happy with the results. But, if you
reduce the dimensions of those images in Irfanview to the 200 to 300 pixel
wide size that you are displaying them in, you should be able to get the
file sizes down to 10 or 15 kb, or less, and get the same quality. Think
about how much faster those files will load.

Once you figure out how to use Irfanview, it won't take that long to redo
your images. In fact, if you have a number of images that are all going to
be displayed at the same size, Irfanview has a batch process that will allow
you to do them all at once. It may or may not be worth your time to optimize
your images, but at least you now know how.

Good luck...and welcome to the details of web building...
