Images on left column of page not printing in Word 2004

Debra Clinton

I have several versions of business cards that are printed 10-up (set up
using LABELS under TOOLS, with the business card format), which used to
print fine on OS9.2.

Ever since I switched to OS X 10.3, the images or graphics in the left
column of the page won't print... But if I move them to the right column,
they will!!! This is happening with ALL of my business card documents!

I have no idea why, but it would seem to rule out a memory issue, since I
have 384 MB RAM and the images DO show up when moved over a few inches on
the page.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Debra,

Not sure, but it's possible you don't have the most recent driver for your
printer, especially since you upgraded to OS X. Check your printer
manufacturer's website and download the latest OS X-compatible driver for
your printer model. See if that helps.

Beth answered your original problem, but just by the way, I don't think
384MB to run both OS X and Word is enough to rule out a memory issue. I bet
you'd be a happier camper with more memory. Some say 512MB is really the
minimum to enjoy using OS X.

Hi Debra:

That's a known (and very obscure...) bug.

Try this:

1) Make a copy of your document

2) Click in the first (top left) cell of the document

3) Use Table>Split Table to insert a paragraph mark above the table that
contains the cards

4) Try a print. That might have fixed the problem. If not:

5) Use Table>Convert>Table to Text and choose separate Text with Tabs

Try a print: all of the images should now print.

6) Now remove the blank line you inserted, select all of the images, and
choose Table>Convert>Text to Table

Try a print. All of the images should still print, but you will now have
borders around them.

7) Select the whole table, then use Borders and Shading to turn the borders
off.

Hope this helps

I thank everyone for your kind replies, but none of the suggested options
worked (I did not try the extra RAM option).

However, using the convert table option below threw all the images into the
top left hand side of the screen while the rest of the text went flying onto
about 2 or 3 extra pages, as they all become one column. That doesn't help
at all, and in fact, is more difficult to fix than just trying to re-create
the entire sheet of business cards.

Having said that, I decided to try just building my own table instead of
using the pre-installed templates, and VOILA, it worked!!!

So to anyone else, just build the table yourself and save a lot of headaches
until this gets fixed by Microsoft...

Thanks again!

Debra

P.s. As a note to Mr. McGhie, I am disappointed that Microsoft is
advertising on their web site that only 128MB of RAM is required to run
Office, but when you purchase it, the actual product box says it needs
256MB. Further, most of the users I've spoken with have suggested that 512
is the ACTUAL minimum requirement if you don't want to have to sit and wait.
But I appreciate your assistance anyway! Thanks!

Mr. McGhie does not work for MS, and MS employees only occasionally show up
here. But we can pass this on to MS, if you can provide the link that says
128MB of RAM is required. I could hardly find any info on requirements on
mactopia.com, but when I finally did, it was 256MB.

Well, I finally found it. The page says 128MB for Office X, but 256MB for
Office 2004--does the Office X box really say 256MB?

One way to get the images to Print is to:

1. Select the image
2. On the Formatting Palette under the "Wrapping" Pane. Try "resetting" the
wrapping style.
For example, if the current wrapping style is set to "Tight" try changing it
to "Behind Text" or "In Front of Text", then back to "Tight".

If the current wrapping style is already set to "Behind Text" or "In Front
fo Text", then just try changing it to "Tight" and checking if it prints.

Thanks

Hi Debra:

I know :) I have 1.2 GB of memory in this Mac.

Actually, Office 2004 will "work" in 256 MB -- I know, because that's all I
had here for a few weeks. But it will be slow, and you can't do much else
while waiting :)

Regrettably, I share your opinion of the Microsoft Templates: they tend to
be expositions of what NOT to do when making a template. The MVPs have
offered our consulting services to improve them, but so far, our offers have
not been accepted :)

However, that particular bug you have run into is very rare: nobody knew it
was in that particular template until you found it, because it doesn't show
up on every machine or on every printer!

Cheers
