Images Turning Black After Save

I'm having that problem in Word 2008, where when you start a new document
insert a picture, then save the document in the old .doc format, the picture
turns into a black box.
I've figured out what is going on- it's Microsoft's way of telling you NOT
to go back to the old format. Do the math: New Format = More $$$ for Them

I don't understand your logic - you've already purchased the upgrade so how
is MS profitability affected by which format you choose to use? Not to
mention that the new OXML format is available for 2004 & X by way of the
converter pack supplied by MS - free of charge, I might add :)

As far as your problem, though, what type of "picture" are you referring to?
There are dozens of image file formats & each one has its own
characteristics. Unless we know what we're dealing with anything offered is
less than guesswork. Also, is your install of Office fully updated (12.1.5)?

FWIW, I'm currently working with a .doc created & saved new by Word 2008
containing 1 each GIF, JPEG, PNG, EPS & TIFF. There's no problem with either
image when the file is opened by 2008 or 2004 - all display as expected.

The problem is the same problem everyone else is having when they get the
black box. The images are the same images our interior design firm has been
working with for years, they are on shared drives, they work fine with every
other software product we have. in this particular case, jpegs. Please
don't blame the images. And I just did the office upgrade this morning and it
did not fix it.

Sorry my message was/is so sarcastic, but after struggling with Entourage
for years, and now this, it's very disheartening.

Let me take a wild guess here: Those are 32-bit CMYK jpegs?

Yep: in .doc they sometimes do go black because in the conversion to .doc
something goes wrong. Chances are if they were RGB jpegs all would be well
-- try it.

Just another good reason not to downgrade the document to a format that
can't handle the new stuff :)
