IMAP and Outlook 2003

I have never used IMAP before, and have just created my first one with
Outlook 2003 SP2 11.6568.6568 (because my mail provider now offers 2GB and
the user I am configuring this thing for is a novice that find doing daily
back-ups difficult). To my amazement, it's bad. Clicking any mail in the
IMAP folders means going to the server. I searched around and found in this
undated article
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP052425981033.aspx the
following:

"When you are offline, Outlook connects to the server only when you specify.
Outlook does not check LDAP servers for recipient names, and IMAP folders
are not available."

If IMAP folders are not available offline then what is the PST cache for?
You mean I can't read my mail when I am on a plane?

I have worked with Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2003 in the offline mode and
subsequently in the cached mode. I am holding some hope that offline, if
not automatic cache mode, might be working with IMAP. I Googled, and all
the info out there says no but they are of year 2003 vintange. It's now
almost 2006 and I would like to ask whether it is sorted out with the
service packs.

Mark the IMAP account in the send/receive group to download the entire
message instead of just the headers. Open each IMAP folder to populate it.
You should then be able to work offline and see the messages.
