IMAP and POP coexisting - Outlook 2003

I have several email addresses (accounts in Outlook terms), all
delivering to the same location. I'm trying to add an IMAP user to
allow better connection to a Web application that only uses IMAP.

I added the email account to Outlook OK. I noticed that Outlook
created a new message store, and within this a folder called Inbox. I
see the same mail in the Outlook Inbox as the Web application.

But I can't create any new folders in the IMAP area and can't copy or
move folders from the POP store. The way I read the Outlook docs, I
should be able to have a hierarchy of folders, but I can't see how to
do this.

Am I missing something? I was hoping to get IMAP working for just a
small part of my messages, and then move everything over (after
reducing the size by archiving locally).

Thanks
Mike

IMAP is just a copy of your folders on the IMAP server. It only does email,
so unless you created more folders in the imap mailbox, you'll only have the
Inbox.

You should be able to create additional IMAP folders. I just tried it and
it worked for me. I was also able to copy and move messages to that new
folder. The data appears both in Outlook and on the server, as I would
expect. I used the standard File>New>Folder, and specified the root of the
IMAP store as the parent.

It depends on the mail server. I have one that won't let me create them in
outlook - I need to do it online then subscribe to them in outlook.

Does it make any difference that the IMAP store is not the default?

Thanks

In outlook? No. you'd make the folder in the IMAP pst though and if your
server supports it, the folder is uploaded to the IMAP mailbox.

It doesn't matter that the IMAP store is not the default because an IMAP
store can never be the default. Outlook won't allow it.

Do you have your IMAP root correctly defined? Are you trying to create the
folder at the correct level? For example, with gmail's IMAP, if you use the
default (empty) root, then you need to create your folders one level down
below "[Gmail]". If you set "[Gmail]" as the root, then you won't need to
do that.* Each IMAP server has its own needs. It's possible your IMAP
server, as Diane says, won't allow new folders.

*Actually, when you create a folder in Outlook when using gmail, gmail
creates a "label", not, apparently, a real folder. It operates like a
folder, though, both in Outlook and on the gmail web site.
