IMAP download email at turtle speed

Anyone experience connectivity issues using IMAP. I have noticed that my
computer hangs when I try to browse emails using IMAP. To gets to the point
where I have had to reboot the machine to get is to work again. This happen
an another machine in the same office. I have tried a POP account and that
works fine.
Any ideas?

PS. I heard that IMAP is not on Microsoft top list so support for it is
relax, is this true. The reason for this is that Netscape seems to have not
issues reading IMAP.
