I have been trying to import contacts from specific category lists in
my address book to excel. I haven't had trouble with data merging them
by category into word, but can not figure out how to do it in excel...
any insight would be wonderful!

Are you referring to the "Office Address Book" - i.e. Entourage' Address
Book. Exporting to tab-delimited file will open in Excel easily enough but -
as you say - Entourage's own native File/Export/Contacts won't let you
export by category. There are ways of doing Data Merge to Word, then select
and Table/Convert Text to Table, then copy and paste into Excel, but it gets
really messy and really limits you to just a few fields (columns) in Word.

You could get my shareware script "Export-Import Entourage X" from

MacScripter.net <http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/>

which will do exactly what you want (and a lot more) - export by category,
all fields. Open in Excel. The package also comes with a number of Excel
scripts for manipulating the data in Excel (Convert the text dates to real
dates for sorting, merge columns, split columns, etc.)
