import EPS with tiff-preview crashes word 2004

R

Richard Quist

Trying to import an EPS file with a tiff preview into Word results in a
crash. I know I've seen messages related to this issue before, but haven't
seen any resolution. Any ideas?

Thanks

Works OK here. Try
1. Varying the eps with Tiff preview source (I recommend passing it
through OmniGraffle -- download a free trial from Omnigroup. When you
fall in love with it, pay up. I want them to stay *very* healthy)
2. Getting your Word properly up-to-date. The latest is 11.2.6. You are
on 11.2.3 (maybe -- Microsoft is utterly pants when it comes to
consistently updating version numbers across their products. I would
not like to bet against Word/Office 2006 11.2.6 reporting 11.2.3 in a
crash dump.)

Hi Richard -

Elliott is quite right about the update - 11.2.5 is particularly important,
11.2.6 tacks on after that.

How did you attempt to "import" the EPS? If something other than
Insert>Picture..., that could be the cause.

Another potential issue: What other software was running & how large is the
EPS file? Your 512 MB may not have been enough to handle the load - OS X
10.4x & Word consume a great deal of resources all by themselves.

Lastly, to save you the effort, there's typically no need to post error
reports unless requested to - practically nobody here knows what they mean,
anyhow. We're mostly users like you, not tech support or OS architects :)

Hi Richard:

Ensure that the TIFF is 24-bit colour. Office applications can't handle
anything higher (yet!). In a graphics shop, it's common to see 36-bit CMYK
TIFF. That *will* crash Word. It must be RGB. And no 48-bit colour either
:)

Some applications will allow a WMF preview. That's ideal: if the PostScript
driver is missing on the printer, the vector prints from WMF with little
perceptible loss of resolution.

Cheers
