Import Excel in Access 2000 worked...2007 Gives Invalid Character

I have a db with a table of data from an Excel sheet. Import external data in
2000 worked fine but 2007 gives an error message "is not a valid name. Make
sure that it does not include invalid characters or punctuation and that it
is not too long"

Why would the import work in Access 2000 and not in 2007? I can't find any
odd characters in the Excel sheet. Anyway to get around this?
