Import from Excel to Project Master file

Hello,

I have a master project file which is made up of about 100 inserted
projects. I would like to allow users to update their status in Excel and
them import this into the master project. I can successfully export the
master project. Each task entry appears as expected in Excel. Unfortunately,
when I update the status and then import, none of the changes show up. I'm
using the Unique ID as my merge key.

Can I import changes directly to the master file?

Thanks,

tara

Hello tara657,

Specifically what data are you trying to import? What version of
Project (including service packs) are you using?

Please let us know what specific fields (task, resource, assignment)
are you attempting to import and we'll try a test run.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

I'm running MS Project 2007 with XP Professional SP 2.

The fields I'm attempting to import are:
Actual Start
Actual Finish
% Complete
Actual Work
Date1
Notes

The import works fine so long as the project does not include project files
I've inserted via linking.

Thanks,
Tara

Hi Tara,

Thanks for the update. In quick testing I am seeing the same issue
you are. I've created a very simple master project with linked
subprojects and when I attempt to import updated data into the
master merging on the Unique ID, it simply creates new tasks.

Why, I'm afraid I can't answer -- I don't know. My only suggestion
is to import data into the subproject files directly and not attempt
to go to the master.

Thanks Julie,

I was afraid that might be the answer. I'll be grouping my 100+ project
files into 6 or so and do the updates into those projects. At least I'll
still be able to use the master project for reports.
