Import linked projects

I have 10 projects with up to 100 cross project links. I have imported these
projects to Project Server and all the links have been lost.

How do I import projects that have inter-project links without losing the
links?

You can't. What you should do is to keep a log of all cross-project links,
then break all the links between the projects before you import them into
Project Server. After importing them, use your log to recreate the links.
Hope this helps.

Dale, thank you for your excellent help. Your responses to everyone are
fantastic. And so is your new book "Ultimat Learning Guide to Project 2007".

I am wondering if there is some way I can import the links (eg perhaps from
an Excel file that has just the predecessors and successors).

I am working in Project Server 2007 as well as in 2003. Is it possible to
import the links to P2007.

It is an enormous job for us to re make the links manually. And its not
once because we are having problems so I have made several failed attempts to
import the projects so far.

Can you suggest any way that I could import the links?

One other question: why do I need to break the links before I Import the
projects?

I'm not sure I have any easy ways for you to recreate those cross-project
links. I would ask you to consider whether all of those links are really
required in your master project. If so, recreate them manually. If not,
only set the absolutely required cross-project links. We always recommend
that you take a "minimalist" approach to cross-project dependencies,
focusing on only what is absolutely necessary to manage the individual plans
and to see the big picture in the master project. Hope this helps.

You can probably accomplish this by copying the links to a plain text field
first, then use a little macro to change the reference to the new server and
copy the values back to the predecessor or successor fields.

Gary,

Thank you for this. Actually I have found that the cross project links are
being imported by PS2007 without any problems. As soon as the projects are
imported the links are reestablished automatically without any problems.

The process is to save the project to server using 'Save as" instead of
using the 'Import project to Enterprise' wisard. The import project to
wizard im P2007 has a number of bugs at the moment (eg not mapping resources
to Enterprise resources, generating ne calendars and assigning them to
resourcces and tasks so that the import cannot be compled properly).
Microsoft advise the workaround mentioned above.

Thanks to you and to Dale Howard for earlier comments and to Ed who helped
me via Project Host and to your new book. It is excellent.
