Import of Actuals

We are looking to import actuals into MS Project 2000 from an electronic source. We have tried excel and ODBC but are having issue with importing the information at the individual resource level per activity (task).
If this is something you have addressed, perhaps you could let us know how you got around the issue of the single merge field for import as to do the updates daily at a resource level it needs to be able to merge on an field that is activity id and resource identifier and pick up the info into the date field required.

I have done this for several customers but each time I use VBA to access the
assignment, not the merge routines or Open.
