Import Problems with Excel

I have a very strange problem. When I try to import an Excel 2003 worksheet
into Access 2003 the Import dialog will not accept the workbook name. I can
see Excel workbooks in the file list but selecting one does not place the
name in Filename text box. I have selected Excel as the File type. If I type
in the file name and click on Import nothing happens - the Import dialog just
goes away. There is no error message. This occurs for all Excel workbooks.
Could this have something to do with the having Office 2007 installed on the
same machine?? I really need both because I teach both versions. I am at a
loss as to how to correct this. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Oops - I forgot to mention that is only if you are running Vista. If not,
you may have to reinstall Office and make sure to select CUSTOM install and
then when you can choose the programs you will select RUN ALL FROM MY
COMPUTER for all of the options.

Hi,

I had something similar take place on a client's machine. I tried a number
of different things - for some unknown, the cure was to navigate via windows
explorer to the Office11 folder, click on msaccess.exe; a window popped up
asking if I wanted to install this program? This was a confusing message to
me at this point, but I figured I had nothing to lose - was facing reinstall
anyway because I didn't seem to be getting anywhere. So I clicked yes -
another message appeared, something about updating...

Then when Access 2003 popped up - the application that was crashing started
working and I could import Excel files, everything was back to normal. I
have no verfiable or valid explanation for what was wrong, why that fixed
it, just a speculation that msaccess.exe being fired up from the home folder
directly saw that something was missing/wrong (probably in the registry) in
an uninstalled state from 2003 version perspective so it ran some of that MS
Office auto-repair installation code that was lurking about in the 2003
version.

Hope this helps... at least might give you something else to try before you
get radical with the uninstall, reinstall process.

Hey that worked!! Thank you! The first thing I did originally was to check to
make sure the user was an administrator at the vista level, but that did not
change things. I wonder if the problem was caused by changing the user to
administrator after Access was installed on the vista machine. Seems odd that
there was no error message.

In any event, I appreciate the help greatly.

Let me also thank you for directing me to the btadevelopment web site - it
looks to have a great deal of good info on Access.

I used Bob's method first and it worked, however I want to thank you as well
Gordon for your quick answer. I believe the problem was with me changing the
affected account from user to administrator after the Access installation -
just another "gotcha" from vista. A lesson learned - I hope someone from MS
sees this as well.
