import pst files

Cali 54

I attempted to import and outlook.pst file using File|open and selected the
file on the external HD. It is not a read only file. Nothing appeared to
happen so after quite a while, I closed Outlook and opened it. The calendar
events scheduled and the address book are present, but no emails or folders
with emails (the pst file is 880K). I note that in All Mail Items there are
two personal folders - both show just the one email that apparently loaded
when I last opened Outlook. I have not tried to import again. Any
suggestions? Can I repair Outlook or do I have to remove Office 2007 and
reinstall?? Can I remove one of the two personal folders?
Thanks for your help.

Please provide a more accurate description of what you did. Note that
opening a PST file is not the same as importing it. It matters greatly
whether you ever actually imported a PST file or not, so be accurate.
Include the following other information:
1. How you configured this Outlook profile in the first place
2. How you accessed the second PST file and what you expected it to contain
3. What you are trying to do
4. Whether you have the option to close either of these PST files in their
context menu (i.e., R click menu).

Using File>Open is not an Import, it merely opens the Personal Folder set
(data File) in Outlook
An Import does as it says on the tin, Imports the data from another data
file to your current data file
If you used file open then you will have a second set of personal folders.
In Folder tree View the topmost set of Personal Folders is the default set,
the bottom set of Personal Folders is the one you just opened Examine the
contents of its folders

A data file of 880kb contains very little data.
How did you get your origonal data file onto the external?

Repairing or uninstalling Outlook is not going to do anything for your
current problem

Are you SURE the file was 880k in size? That's VERY small. A new, blank pst
file is 256K in size.....

I am using XP pro SP3 and Outlook 2007 SP1.
Originally, I searched for *.pst including hidden files, found it and copied
it to my external drive.
After receiving your and the other replies, I did use import with File |
Import | from .pst and browsed to the external HD. This time the emails came
across, but created another set of personal folders, let's call these pf2.
What I would like to do now is to delete the other personal folders, pf1 and
keep the pf2 folders and emails as they are.
Can you tell me how to do this? Also it now seems that my steps to save the
original .pst worked, but is there a better way?
Thanks for your help

You would need to use data management to set pf2 as the default set, then in
tree view close pf1

You are digging a deeper hole and answered none of my questions. No one ever
said you should use Import and you most certainly should not have done so.

1. How you configured this Outlook profile in the first place.
I just started using outlook by importing from OE a couple of months ago.
Beyond that I haven't to my knowledge configured a profile.contain
I copied it to an external HD and believed it contained my personal folders
including the ones I created, my address book and calendar eventsI am trying to replicate/recreate the same information that was in the
Outlook from a machine that has crashed, and can't be recovered due to the
vendor's admitted faulty discs. The machine I am working on is a replacement.their context menu (i.e., R click menu).
I have the option to close pf2, the .pst that I 'moved' from the external HD
to OL, but not pf1, which I presume is the default one in OL on this machine.
Thanks for your patience

Have you read any of the posts made daily here on how to migrate Outlook
data? Might be a good place to start:
