The mini-calendar does not support colors. My birthdays and other
non-holiday events show fine on my date navigator and mini-calendar.

||| While viewing the calendar there are 3 smaller calendars on the left
||| for the previous, current, and next months. Events (perhaps those
||| that you flag as important) should highlight that date on the mini
||| calender. Then regardless of whether you are using the daily, 7
||| day, or month view, you could see that there is an important event
||| comming up on that mini calendar. You could then click on that
||| date to see what it is.
