imported email from OExpress to Outlook2002 shown as unread

After importing all a large section of emails are shown as unread. I selected
all of them in each folder and clicked on mark as read. However, nothing
happens? When I click to open one of them a message comes up telling me
Outlook does not have 'the custom form to open it"?
