Importing 2004 POP folders/messages into 2008

I installed Mac Office 2008 today. On install I tried to import my
2004 identity, but I was told I didn't have enough Disk Space... it
said it was 9GB in size. My 2004 identiy was made up of:

MS Exchange Account... this is my work account, connecting via
Entourage
POP Account... w/ tons of messages/folders
IMAP Account... very small, few messages

The strange thing is, looking at MS User Data / Office 2004 / Main
Identity -- it says that my Database is 3.6 GB... NOT 9GB.

So... because it says that there was no way it would import this 9GB
identity I started over and did not import ANY identity. I set up new
Exchange accounts, new IMAP account, and a new POP account... all
corresponding to the old accounts.

The Exchange account and the IMAP accounts are all connected fine, I
can see all messages, etc..

The problem is with the POP account... I cannot find any way to import
those old files and folders? I really need them. What to do? And
why would it tell me when I try to import that its 9GB??

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I've never heard this problem mentioned so don't know why other it's similar
to the rebuild where your data is duplicated during the process requiring
double the drive space requirements for the rebuild.

First, if your drive is getting full, you are going to start experiencing
slow downs, crashes and other problems. A drive needs breathing room. You
can't fill it up and it work. You need somewhere between 10-25% free space.

Now to get your POP mail over. In Entourage 2004, use File --> Export as an
Entourage archive. Select what you want exported. Then in 2008, Import -->
select the .rge file you exported. It will show up as one folder with
subfolder. A separate option is to make MBOX files. Drag folders to the
desktop. This creates an MBOX files that can be dragged into the folder
list. This does not get subfolders you have to drag each one, or use this
script.

For MBOX files: Run this script on your messages: Export folders (this gets
subfolders too). The script will fail on a folder with corruption.

As you can see the export as Entourage archive file is quicker.

Thanks for the response. The trouble is I deleted Entourage 2004
during the install. I did not foresee this issue. So I'm going to
offload 20GB and then try to import the database/identity.

Question - after I import the database, will I have two identities?
Can I delete the 2004 database? Does it merge them into one? Ie,
once I have enough disk space to import the old database identity,
what happens to my disk space? Is it doubled permanently?

There is no way to offload the 2004 emails unless you open it in 2004. Just
for the heck of it, try this. Move/copy the 2004 Identity folder files to a
new 2008 Identity and see if Entourage will update the database to 2008
format.

Until you can get it reduced which means you will need to install 2004 again
to do so which runs into the problem of 2004 overwriting the new fonts in
2008. You are just in a royal mess. I suggest buying a drive to move data
off and perhaps wipe your drive and start with a clean system. For around
$100 you can get a FireWire 500 GB drive.

Yes, it would be doubled until it's reduced. From what you are saying I
could be confused but I think you need to just start over. Revert back to
2004 after using "Remove Office" to remove 2008. You could save any new data
from Entourage 2008.

I suspect you are running so low on disk space that you are going to have
problems. I would look to moving data off. "What Size" will help identify
large files that will help you find data that would make a real difference.

Hope this hasn't been too confusing. When you have multiple problems, it can
get overwhelming.
