Importing an Approach file

How can I import an Approach (96/97) file, I've tried following the
instructions in Access - but for some reason it is not working. I export from
Lotus to a dBASE IV (*.DBF) selecting all feilds and all records to be
exported, but when I try to "get external data" in Access (XP-2002) it says
no tables exist.
Am I not doing something correctly?
I am a new user, so I do not have intimate knowledge of data bases - so
please HELP
